EUROAVIA Germany event, hosted by Student AirRace
On June 6th till 8th we hosted the EUROAVIA Germany event. A national event where German EUROAVIA local groups come together to network and compete in a hands-on competition.
This year Student AirRace as part of EUROAVIA Munich hosted an event where the participants were tasked with building racing drones and tuning them in a software suite. Each team built a 7inch quadrotor and learned the basics of FPV racing. A thorough presentation in the beginning set the participants up with assembling the drone, after which they got to research how to optimize the flight performance.
On the second day we went to the field to test the hardware. Fast iterations and a lot of flying minutes helped getting the PID setting right quickly. While for many participants it was the first time flying drones, fast progress in the flying skills was made.
The tuning from Aachen and Bremen was especially good. While it was a close race between those two, ultimately the team from Bremen was able to convince the team, that their drone was the one with the best PID settings.
Besides tinkering, building, flying (and crashing), everyone had a lot of fun during the Air Crash Investigation Game, a fictional plane crash story game, enjoyed some after-work pizza, got a tour through the Makerspace at the Munich Urban Colab and made amazing new connections from other local groups.
It was truly a pleasure to host this event!
